According to a recent study conducted by the Economic and Social Research Council of the University of Leeds, plastic surgery tourism continues to surge across the globe. Although plastic surgery has the reputation of being available only to the affluent, there are new findings that suggest procedures are common across the economic spectrum.
The study found that patients are normally ordinary people wholive on modest incomes. Due to this, many choose to seek surgeryoutside their native countriesbecause of lower prices elsewhere. Although this may seem like a good idea, it can actually be quite dangerous in terms of the surgery itself and the recovery period.
According to theAmerican Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), it is recommended to have surgical procedures performed near your home, as the recovery period calls for plenty of rest and down time. Having to travel back home after a surgery can cause major complications, which then may not be able to be addressed by the initial surgeon.
The survey also found that most patients don't speak the native language of the country they are visiting, putting them at a great disadvantage if complications arise or they need additional help. Most of those polled said they had never visited their destination country prior to their procedure either.
Many patients in the study described their surgeons abroad as uncaring and inattentive.
During a plastic surgery procedure, a patient should never feel as ifhis or herhealth is in danger or that thesurgeon is not as attentive as he or she should be.
