Liposuction

shutterstock_128518763Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, is a body-sculpting procedure performed to remove excess fat deposits and to improve body contour and proportion.

Liposuction may be conducted on many areas of the body, including:

  • Ankles
  • Back
  • Breasts
  • Buttocks
  • Calves
  • Chin
  • Hips
  • Love handles
  • Neckline
  • Stomach and waistline
  • Thighs and knees
  • Upper arms

A liposuction procedure can be performed while the patient is awake with oral sedatives or under anesthesia. In both cases, the area is numbed with local anesthesia to decrease discomfort.

There are many different types of liposuction procedures available, based on the patient’s desired outcome.

Dr. Anthony Taglienti, of Marotta Plastic Surgery Specialists, specializes in liposuction and body contouring. During a consultation, your options will be discussed and personalized based on what is best for your needs and desires.

A small incision is made within the target area and a narrow tube, known as a cannula, is then inserted. The cannula removes the fatty tissues in a vacuum-like manner until the desired effect is met. Once all the excess fat is eliminated, the incisions are closed with sutures. Compression bandages are then applied to help reduce swelling, prevent bleeding, and support the overall area.

Liposuction can take 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the amount of fat that has to be removed. The recovery time for this type of procedure varies from patient to patient. For best results, though, plenty of rest and limited movement is recommended. In addition, a support garment may be worn for several weeks after the surgery.

Although liposuction results in a slimmer, more proportionate physique it is not a replacement for proper diet and exercise. This procedure instead helps target stubborn body areas such as a double-chin, a bulging waistline or love handles.
