Ear Surgery on Long Island

Cosmetic procedures are available for individuals with large ears and for those with congenital (birth) irregularities that detract from their appearance.

Otoplasty, is a surgical procedure that helps reduce protrusion of the ear away from the head. Young children are often teased about their ears sticking out, this teasing can have a devastating effect on the child’s psyche. Typically, children between six to fourteen are prime candidates for ear surgery. However, Otoplasty is not limited to children. Older individuals whose ears are misshapen due to genetics or have experienced a traumatic injury, such as losing an ear or part of an ear have seen success with ear surgery. At Marotta Plastic Surgery, patients of all ages can realize a significantly enhanced quality of life after Otoplasty. With improved facial balance and a more refined look, you can achieve a new level of self-confidence that can impact virtually every aspect of your life.

Benefits of Otoplasty

The primary reason patients seek ear surgery is to improve their overall appearance and facial symmetry.

However, many people who suffered from misshapen ears were subjected to constant teasing as a child—having the surgery restores their self-confidence and self-esteem.

  • Refined ear contours
  • Correct congenital defects
  • Enhanced facial proportion
  • Reconstruction following an injury
  • Reshape earlobes that are too long or offset
  • Correct lop ear (or folding at the tips of the ears)

Otoplasty is one of the safest surgeries available. Typically only a mild anesthetic is needed in adult patients, and it is a safe surgery to undergo as a child.

Am I a candidate for cosmetic Ear Surgery?

If you are unhappy with the size, shape, or protrusion of your ears or feel as if the appearance of one or both ears has caused you emotional distress, you are likely a candidate for Otoplasty. As with any surgical procedure, you should be in generally good health with no underlying health conditions that may prevent you from undergoing surgery safely.

Otoplasty Procedure

The procedure typically takes one to two hours, depending on the extent of your surgery. In most cases, ear surgery is performed under local anesthesia for adults and general anesthesia for children. The typical “ear pinning” Otoplasty procedure reduces ear protrusion by bringing the ears closer to the sides of the head. To begin your Otoplasty Long Island plastic surgeon, Dr. Marotta will first create an incision in the crease at the back of the ear to alter the cartilage behind the ear. Once he has reshaped the cartilage to bring the ears closer to the head, he will close the incision. Otoplasty for other purposes may involve several different techniques. As an entirely customizable procedure, Dr. Marotta can provide you with details regarding your unique treatment during your initial consultation.

Ear Surgery Recovery

To ensure your fastest recovery and best results, you should follow all post-operative instructions meticulously. After your ear surgery is complete, Dr. Marotta will apply large bandages that wrap around your head to promote healing and hold the ear in its new position. After one day, your larger bandages will be replaced with a smaller dressing. During your recovery, you will need to make sure that you rest and limit movement to promote healing and prevent complications. Some Long Island otoplasty patients may experience minor pain during recovery, but this should be easily manageable with oral pain medication.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should my child have Otoplasty?

It is generally recommended that Otoplasty is performed after the cartilage in the ears has settled. This occurs around the age of five. For this reason, many parents choose to correct the appearance of their children’s ears between the ages of five and seven.

How long does it take for the ears to heal after Otoplasty?

While you can expect an immediate change to the shape or protrusion of the ears after Otoplasty, it takes about one year for tissues to settle into the final results.

How will I need to sleep after my surgery?

To prevent affecting your results, you will need to sleep with your head elevated and positioned so that your ears are not in contact with the pillow. You will need to sleep like this for approximately two weeks.

Will my insurance cover Otoplasty?

Despite the emotional impact that overly large or protruding ears can have, Otoplasty is generally considered a cosmetic procedure that is not eligible for insurance coverage. However, Otoplasty may be covered by insurance if it is performed to correct a congenital abnormality or as a reconstructive procedure. It is best to check with your insurance provider about your coverage options.
