What Is Dysport?

Taking care of your skin by eating well, using sun screen and adhering to a regular skincare regimen is an important part of retaining your youthful good looks over time.

However, no matter how disciplined you may be in this respect, age is bound to catch up with you at some point. If you’ve noticed that no amount of cover up can leave you looking and feeling your best, injectables could be the answer. Dysport is one of the many injectables we offer at Marotta Plastic Surgery Specialists on Long Island. It has been approved to treat certain conditions involving crossed eyes, eyelid spasm, cervical dystonia (a spastic muscle disorder with the neck) and motor disorders of the facial nerve (VII cranial nerve). As of April 2009, it has been FDA approved for the cosmetic treatment of forehead wrinkles caused by specific muscle groups. However, this facial injection can be used to address crow’s feet wrinkles, neck bands and other signs of aging in an “off-label” fashion.

How Does Dysport Work?

Clostridia botulina bacteria produce a class of chemical compounds known as “toxins” that can be tapped for anti-aging results by Long island plastic surgeons.

The abobotulinumtoxinA (DYSPORT®) is processed and purified to produce a sterile product suitable for specific therapeutic uses. Once the diluted toxin is injected, it produces a temporary paralysis of muscle by preventing transmission of nerve impulses to muscle. The result is smoother, more youthful skin, and generally lasts for approximately four months.

What Can Dysport Be Used To Treat?

Dysport is used to soften expression-related lines caused by repeated muscle movement. The most common treatment area is the space between the brows, where glabellar lines and frown lines tend to deepen over time. It can also be used for forehead wrinkles, horizontal forehead lines, crow's feet, and other dynamic facial lines caused by active facial muscles. Because Dysport works by relaxing specific muscles, it is best for wrinkles caused by movement rather than volume loss or loose skin.

What Are The Benefits Of Dysport?

Dysport treatment is popular because it is quick, precise, and effective for softening movement-related lines without surgery. It works at the level of muscle contraction, which means it treats one of the root causes of visible expression lines rather than just masking them on the surface of the skin. Benefits of Dysport may include:

  • Smoother glabellar lines, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles
  • Softening of crow's feet and other dynamic facial wrinkles
  • A more rested and refreshed appearance
  • Natural-looking results when dosing is tailored to your unique facial anatomy
  • Little to no interruption to your usual schedule
  • No incisions, general anesthesia, or major recovery time
  • A treatment that can be used on its own or combined with other injectable treatments

Many patients also like that Dysport injections tend to spread a bit more diffusely than Botox, which can be helpful in larger treatment areas like the forehead. The right product depends on the pattern of movement, the strength of the muscles, and the patient’s aesthetic goals.

Am I A Candidate For Dysport?

Not every wrinkle needs a neuromodulator, and not every patient is a fit for Dysport. A good consultation looks at the way the face moves, how etched the lines are at rest, and whether the concern is truly muscular or more structural.

Good Candidates

You may be a good candidate for Dysport treatment if you:

  • Have visible glabellar lines, forehead lines, or crow's feet
  • Notice that your lines and wrinkles get deeper with movement
  • Want a non-surgical option for a smoother, more rested look
  • Are in good general health
  • Have realistic cosmetic goals
  • Want to prevent new wrinkles from becoming more deeply set over time

Many patients seek Dysport injections when they are starting to see stronger movement in the forehead, between the eyebrows, or around the eyes. Younger adults sometimes use Dysport earlier to manage strong expression patterns before fine lines become deeper creases.

Who Is Not A Good Fit

You may not be a good candidate for Dysport if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have a known allergy to any ingredient in botulinum toxin type A
  • Have an infection or irritation at the planned injection site
  • Have certain neuromuscular disorders that affect muscle strength
  • Are seeking correction for volume loss, loose skin, or more advanced signs of aging
  • Expect a completely frozen result or want a permanent change

In some cases, a patient is better served by dermal fillers, skin resurfacing, or another approach entirely. We will say so. Honest turn-aways are part of good aesthetic care.

How Should I Prepare For Dysport?

Preparing for Dysport treatment is simple, but small details can help reduce bruising and make the appointment smoother.

  1. Schedule a consultation first. We use your consultation to review your medical history, facial movement, and goals so we can create a personalized treatment plan.
  2. Review your medications and supplements. Certain products can increase bruising. We will let you know what to avoid and when.
  3. Arrive with clean skin. Come in without heavy makeup if possible, especially around the planned treatment areas.
  4. Avoid alcohol before your appointment. This can reduce the risk of bruising at the injection site.
  5. Plan around big events. While downtime is minimal, it is smart to avoid booking Dysport injections right before an important social event.
  6. Know your goals. The best results come from being specific. Tell us what bothers you, what kind of movement you want to keep, and whether you prefer a softer or stronger correction.

What Is A Dysport Treatment Like?

A Dysport appointment is quick, but it should never feel rushed. The treatment itself only takes a few minutes, but the planning is where good results start. First, we examine your face at rest and in motion. You may be asked to frown, raise your eyebrows, or smile so we can see how the facial muscles are working and which targeted muscles are creating the visible lines. This matters because Dysport is not placed by guesswork. It is placed according to the way your face actually moves.

Next, we cleanse the skin and mark the injection site or sites as needed. Most patients do not need numbing for Dysport injections, but a topical anesthetic can be used if you are especially sensitive. The injections themselves are very quick and performed with a very fine needle. The sensation is brief. A few tiny pinches. That’s usually it. Steph’s ouch factor note belongs here: most patients rate it as very tolerable, more annoying than painful.

From there, the appointment is done. The full procedure usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the number of treatment areas. Safety protocols include a full review of your history, dosing based on your anatomy, and precise placement to avoid over-treating the wrong muscles. That is how we keep results looking balanced and appropriate to the patient’s face.

Recovery After Dysport

One of the reasons Dysport treatment is so popular is that recovery is light. There is no surgical wound care, no bandaging, and no extended time away from work. Still, we give specific aftercare because even a simple injectable appointment deserves attention to detail.

Immediate Downtime

Most patients return to normal routines right away. You may have mild swelling, pinpoint redness, or temporary redness at the injection site for a short period after injections. Small bumps can appear briefly and usually settle quickly. In rare cases, mild bruising can occur.

Social Downtime

There is usually very little social downtime after Dysport injections. Many patients schedule treatment during a lunch break or between errands. If you bruise easily, you may prefer to give yourself a few days before a major event, but most people feel comfortable being seen the same day.

Exercise / Makeup / Sun / Skincare Restrictions

We usually recommend staying upright for several hours after treatment and avoiding vigorous exercise until later that day. Makeup can typically be applied carefully after a few hours if the skin is not irritated. Avoid rubbing the area, aggressive facials, or heavy pressure on the treated areas right away. Sun protection always matters, especially when you are investing in the quality and appearance of your skin. While Dysport does not make the skin photosensitive in the way some resurfacing treatments do, daily sunscreen is still part of protecting your long-term results.

Provider Aftercare Tips

A few practical reminders help:

  • Do not massage treated areas unless we specifically instruct you to
  • Avoid lying flat immediately after treatment
  • Follow all post-operative instructions, even though this is not a surgical procedure
  • Give the product time to settle before judging the outcome
  • Call us with any concerns, especially if something feels off

Serious side effects are uncommon, but in very rare cases, botulinum products can spread beyond the intended area. That is one reason technique and injector experience matter.

When Will I See Results From Dysport?

This is one of the most common consultation questions, and the answer depends on what you mean by “results.”

Same Day

You will not see the full effect the same day. The injections are done that day, but the medication needs time to affect the nerve-to-muscle communication.

1 Week

Many patients start to notice softening within a few days. By about one week, movement is often reduced, and the treated area begins to look smoother.

2 Weeks

At around two weeks, the result is usually more complete. This is the point when we can best assess whether the dose and placement achieved the intended effect.

After Final Session

For most patients, Dysport treatment is maintained on a recurring schedule. There is not usually a “series” in the way there is for laser or microneedling, but long-term improvement depends on staying consistent over time.

Marotta Plastic Surgery Specialists logo

How Long Do Results Last?

Results typically last about three to four months, though that can vary depending on the strength of the treated muscles, the dose used, your metabolism, and how expressive your face is. Some patients metabolize botulinum toxin more quickly than others. Some find their results last longer after repeated treatments. Areas with stronger muscle activity may wear off sooner. During your consultation, we can talk about what is realistic for your face and how often you may want maintenance.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Most patients need one treatment session at a time, followed by maintenance appointments several times per year. Dysport injections are not a one-and-done fix. They work best when repeated on a schedule that matches your movement patterns and goals. Some people come in three times a year. Others prefer every four months. The right cadence depends on how quickly your facial expressions return, how much movement you want to preserve, and whether you are treating one area or multiple treatment areas.

Dysport Vs. Other Options

Patients often compare Dysport with Botox, and that makes sense. Both are forms of botulinum toxin, and both are used to soften expression-based lines by interrupting the nerve signals that tell certain muscles to contract. They are different brands of a similar class of products, and both are FDA-approved for cosmetic use in specific settings.

The main difference is that Dysport contains a different formulation of botulinum toxin type A. It does not have the exact same active ingredient as Botox, but it works through the same basic mechanism and falls under the same family of neuromodulators. Some patients find that Dysport kicks in a little faster. Others prefer how it behaves in broader areas like the forehead. If the concern is volume loss rather than movement, dermal fillers may be the better option. If the issue is loose skin or more advanced structural aging, cosmetic surgery may make more sense than injectable treatments. In some cases, we combine Dysport with fillers or other non-surgical treatments for a more complete result.

Can Dysport Be Combined With Other Treatments?

Yes. Dysport is often combined with other injectable treatments or skin-focused services when the goal is broader facial rejuvenation. Depending on your needs, we may combine Dysport treatment with:

  • Dermal fillers for volume loss
  • Chemical peels for surface texture
  • Medical-grade skincare
  • Laser or light-based treatments
  • Other non-surgical treatments
  • Select cosmetic surgery procedures as part of a more comprehensive plan

This is where a good personalized treatment plan matters. The best results usually come from treating the right problem with the right tool, not forcing one product to do everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of Dysport treatment depends on how many units are needed and which areas are being treated. Treating glabellar lines alone costs less than treating the forehead, crow’s feet, and other facial lines together. We review pricing during your consultation.

Not universally. Dysport and Botox are both effective neuromodulators. The better choice depends on your anatomy, muscle movement, prior treatment history, and the look you want.

Yes, when it is dosed and placed correctly. The goal is to soften movement-related wrinkles while keeping your expression believable. We aim for natural-looking results, not a frozen face.

Many patients start seeing changes within a few days, with fuller results appearing by about one to two weeks.

Yes. Dysport injections can be used in multiple areas during the same appointment, including crow's feet, forehead lines, and the frown lines between the brows.

There is no perfect age. Some young people start early because they have strong facial movement and want to prevent etched-in lines. Others do not need it until later. The better question is whether your facial movement is creating lines you want to soften.

Yes. Avoid rubbing the area, lying flat right away, and intense exercise for the rest of the day. We will give you simple aftercare instructions based on your treatment.
