What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a more proportionate, desired appearance.

The breasts are often thought of the most womanly part of the body, one that elicits femininity and self-confidence. Having very large breasts may be the cause of both emotional and physical pain. Although our Long Island breast reduction patients undergo this procedure for a range of reasons, two of the most common include discomfort associated with larger breasts and appearance dissatisfaction. Often, those who have larger breasts experience pain in the back, neck and shoulders, in addition to bra strap indentations and skin irritation below the breast crease. If you are in good health, maintain realistic expectations for after surgery, and have breasts that limit activities, quality of life or overall happiness, a breast reduction may be for you.

Ideal Breast Reduction Candidates

Breast reduction may be appropriate for women whose breast size contributes to back, neck, or shoulder pain, bra strap indentations, skin irritation, posture concerns, or difficulty exercising comfortably. Candidates should be in good general health, maintain realistic expectations, and understand the recovery process and resulting scars.

During your consultation at Marotta Plastic Surgery, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. James Marotta will evaluate your anatomy, symptoms, medical history, breast composition, and desired reduction to determine the best surgical approach.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia. The surgical technique will be selected according to your breast size, skin elasticity, breast composition, and the amount of tissue being removed.

Incisions are commonly placed around the areola and vertically down the lower breast. An additional incision may be made within the breast fold for a more extensive reduction. Excess skin, fat, and glandular tissue are removed before the remaining tissue is lifted and reshaped. The areola may also be reduced and repositioned higher on the breast. For exceptionally large breasts, the nipple and areola may need to be removed and grafted into a higher position. Internal dissolvable sutures support the new breast shape, and all removed breast tissue is sent to pathology for evaluation. Scars are permanent, although they typically soften and fade with time.

Breast Reduction Results

The reduction in breast size is visible immediately, although swelling and bandages will initially obscure the final shape. As healing progresses, the breasts settle into a lighter, lifted, and more proportionate position.

Many patients also experience relief from breast-related pressure, irritation, and physical limitations. Results are long-lasting, though pregnancy, aging, gravity, hormonal changes, and weight fluctuations can alter the breasts over time.

Breast Reduction Recovery

Swelling, bruising, tightness, and soreness are common during the early recovery period. Patients are typically asked to wear a supportive surgical bra for approximately three weeks to protect the healing tissue and support the new breast shape. The appropriate amount of time away from work depends on the extent of surgery and the physical demands of your job. Exercise, heavy lifting, and strenuous activity must be limited until your surgeon confirms that healing has progressed safely. Your surgical team will provide detailed aftercare instructions and monitor your recovery during follow-up appointments.

Will Insurance Cover My Breast Reduction Procedure?

At Marotta Plastic Surgery Specialists on Long Island, we understand that overly large breasts can cause not only cosmetic concerns but also serious physical discomfort, including back pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and posture problems. For many women, breast reduction surgery is not just about aesthetics—it’s a medically necessary procedure that can significantly improve quality of life.

Our team has had great success in working with health insurance providers to obtain out-of-network coverage for breast reduction. We prepare and submit a comprehensive approval packet directly to your insurance company on your behalf.

If additional documentation is required, we can guide you through the process of obtaining evaluations from specialists such as an orthopedic surgeon, chiropractor, or physical therapist. These reports provide important medical evidence that connects your symptoms—such as chronic pain, skin irritation, or physical limitations—to overly large breasts.

At Marotta Plastic Surgery Specialists, we are committed to helping our patients not only achieve their desired results but also navigate the insurance approval process with confidence.
