According to Medscape, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of Juvederm Ultra CX for lip augmentation procedures in adults 21 years and older.
The injectable is now the only dermal filler approved to last up to one year in the lips and perioral area. Comprised ofhyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance found in the skin, the soft injection allows men and women to increase structure and volume in injected areas.
With age, patients lose volume and structure, causing the lips to become thinner and less plump than before. As this can be a factor when it comes to self image and confidence, the ability to treat it safely and effectively is great for patients.
During clinical trials, 79 percent of participants displayed a "meaningful improvement" in terms of lip fullness within three months after treatment. More than 78 percent reported an improvement in their overall satisfaction with the appearance and feel of the lips one year after treatment as well.
"When discussing lip treatment with patients, they most often express concern over being able to achieve a natural-looking result," said board certified dermatologist Suzanne Kilmer in an Allergan press release. "Now, physicians and their patients can achieve the natural-looking results they have come to know and expect with Juvederm Ultra XC."
Often, patients are interested in making a change in lip appearance, but are afraid the effect will be too much or unnatural. Juvederm allows patients to take control of their appearance, without losing their natural appearance.
