What is vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that can help if you have vaginal laxity. Childbirth and aging can cause your vaginal tissue to become less elastic and have weakened muscles. This atrophy can cause you (and your partner) to lose sensation during intercourse and can even make it difficult for a tampon to stay in.

Vaginoplasty removes extra tissue and restores muscle tightness to create firmer, more responsive vaginal tissue. A tighter vaginal canal can thus improve your sexual pleasure and satisfaction.

Who is a good candidate for vaginoplasty?

Women who’ve experienced stretching of vaginal tissue during childbirth or because of hormone changes during menopause are often good candidates for vaginoplasty. You may have tried non-invasive vaginal revitalization treatments, such as bipolar radiofrequency therapy, without good results.

Vaginoplasty reduces the diameter of the vagina and increases the tightness of vaginal muscles, restoring the vagina and the supporting structures to a pre-pregnancy state.

Dr. Hill does a thorough pelvic exam and review of your symptoms and medical history before recommending a vaginoplasty.

What can I expect during vaginoplasty?

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure and may be done under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of your surgery.

Dr. Hill then removes a pie-shaped section of excess skin from inside the vagina. How large this section is depends on the extent of tightening desired. She tightens tissue beneath the skin with sutures and then closes the outer layer of your vaginal tissue. Dr. Hill also removes any excess skin to give your vagina a smooth, compact appearance.

What is recovery like following vaginoplasty?

You should expect to take about one to two weeks of downtime following a vaginoplasty. For the first few days, you’ll have redness, swelling, and bruising. Some women may find it painful to walk for the first few days, so Dr. Hill may recommend you get a lot of rest after the procedure.

You’ll need to avoid putting anything in your vagina for eight weeks, including tampons. You should also refrain from sexual intercourse for eight weeks to allow for healing.
