Excess tissue at your labia can make your clothes fit poorly and make you self-conscious. At Marotta Plastic Surgery Specialists, Dr. Jennifer Hill provides women on Long Island and the surrounding area a permanent fix to labial issues. To learn how a labiaplasty can help relieve symptoms of twisting and tugging of the labia, call the office, or book an appointment online.
A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size or changes the shape of the labia minora or labia majora. The procedure targets the lips of the vagina (the major) or the internal, smaller lips (the minor).
If you have excessive labia tissue or asymmetry between the sides, you may choose a labiaplasty. Some women find excess tissue causes issues with:
The excess tissue can itch, twist, and tug. Plus, the look may make you feel self-conscious.
Depending on your labia minora and aesthetic goals, you may undergo one of two types of surgeries. During a trim labiaplasty, Dr. Hill removes the excess tissue and sews up the area. She may alternatively recommend a wedge procedure in which a pie-shaped piece of tissue is removed. She can maintain a natural border after the tissue is removed and reduce extra folds in the clitoral hood at the same time.
If you opt for surgery on the labia majora, the hair-bearing area of the labia, Dr. Hill removes two small crescents of skin from each side. The area targeted for this removal is near the inner portion of the lips.
Expect to need about one week of downtime. During this week, apply ice to the area to reduce swelling and pain. You may also need to elevate your bottom to keep swelling to a minimum. Tampon and sexual intercourse are off limits for about four to six weeks. Excessive swelling reduces after about six weeks, but some minor swelling may continue for up to six months.
The American Society of Plastic Surgery reports a more than 90% satisfaction rate in women having undergone a labiaplasty. The procedures should mean you have labial lips that no longer hang below the hair-bearing area of your genitals. A labiaplasty generally improves symptoms of tugging or discomfort caused by labial tissue.
