How Does Sculptra Work?

Sculptra® Aesthetic is made of injectable poly-L-Lactid acid.

This substance is mixed with water, and local anesthetic and then injected into any areas of the face that are showing excessive signs of aging due to fat loss. Over the course of a few weeks, the body’s own collagen is stimulated to fill in depressions and wrinkles. A single injection will continue to stimulate collagen up to three months after the procedure and can potentially last for two years.

Sculptra® has been safely used outside the United States since 1999 in over 150,000 patients under the trade names New-Fill™ and Sculptra®. This product has since been approved by the FDA for restoration and/or correction of the signs of facial fat loss (lipoatrophy) in people with human immunodeficiency virus. Today, Sculptra® Aesthetic is being widely used for cosmetic reasons by patients across the United States.

What to Expect During Your Sculptra® Treatment at Marotta Plastic Surgery Specialists

Prior to treatment, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the patient’s face, numbing the skin. Sculptra® is then mixed with local anesthetic and injected in very small amounts to guarantee even distribution, into the area to be treated with a very fine needle so patients feel minimal discomfort.

Your Long Island plastic surgeon will give you deep facial massage is performed following the procedure to ensure both the patient’s comfort and optimal results. Immediately following injection, an ice pack will be placed on the patient’s face to soothe any pain and minimize the potential for bruising or swelling. If you do experience redness at the injection site, this disappears shortly after, allowing patients to return to work immediately following the procedure.

More extensive injections may create some bruising that can last for a week or so that can easily be covered with make-up. Within four to six weeks, the effects of Sculptra® become apparent with continued improvement for up to three months per injection session. Long Island Sculptra patients usually require two or three injection sessions to attain the desired effect. Once achieved, the correction of facial aging and improvement in facial contour can last for up to two years.
