The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved Kybella, an injectable solution for the dreaded below-the-chin fat that plagues many Americans. Identical to the deoxycholic acid that is naturally produced in the body, this injection enables the body to absorb fat more easily. Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment designed specifically to target and reduce moderate to severe fat below the chin. The active ingredient is synthetic deoxycholic acid. In the human body, naturally occurring deoxycholic acid helps break down and absorb dietary fat. When we use it in a cosmetic procedure, it does exactly the same thing. When injected into the submental area, it permanently destroys fat cells. This process is known clinically as injection lipolysis.

Ideal candidates are adults dealing with submental fullness who are at a stable weight. You also need to have good skin elasticity. If your primary issue is loose skin rather than fat beneath the chin, this treatment won’t tighten it. You’d need a neck lift instead. We review your medical history closely. You aren't a good candidate if you have an active infection in the chin area, have a history of difficulty swallowing, or are pregnant, as the risks to an unborn baby are unknown.

This is not a one-and-done fix. Kybella treatment requires patience. Multiple treatments are almost always necessary. Clinical studies show that most patients need between two and four treatment sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart. For cases of severe fat, you can have up to six treatments. You'll start noticing the fat melting away and the profile sharpening a few weeks after your second or third session.
