Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, is a procedure that removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a more proportionate, desired appearance.
The breasts are often thought of the most womanly part of the body, one that elicits femininity and self-confidence. Having very large breasts may be the cause of both emotional and physical pain. Although our Long Island breast reduction patients undergo this procedure for a range of reasons, two of the most common include discomfort associated with larger breasts and appearance dissatisfaction. Often, those who have larger breasts experience pain in the back, neck and shoulders, in addition to bra strap indentations and skin irritation below the breast crease. If you are in good health, maintain realistic expectations for after surgery, and have breasts that limit activities, quality of life or overall happiness, a breast reduction may be for you.
Your body should never hold you back from living your best life or feeling good about yourself.
There are many techniques used to reduce the size of the breasts, and the exact technique that will be performed on you will be chosen during your consultation with our Board Certified Physicians. Some common factors that will be evaluated include breast composition, the anticipated reduction amount and personal preference.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and is most often performed by directly removing areas of the breast. Often, incisions are made around the areola, and down the center of the breast. Sometimes, an incision is also made underneath the breast in the fold. Then, underlying breast tissue is reduced, lifted and shaped. If needed, the areola size is reduced so it can be moved into a new, higher position.
If your breasts are excessively large, then the nipple may have to be removed and transplanted to a higher position. Dissolvable sutures; are placed deep within the breast tissue to support the new breast shape. All removed breast tissue is sent to pathology for review. Although incision lines are permanent, in most cases they will fade with time.
The results of the breast reduction can be seen immediately when surgical swelling fades and bandages are removed. You will be placed in a bra after your surgery for approximately 3 weeks.
