What is a Breast Lift?

A Breast Lift, Also Known as a Mastopexy, Is a Surgical Procedure to Raise and Reshape Sagging Breasts

It may be sought for many reasons, including post-pregnancy body changes, weight fluctuations, and to reverse the natural aging process. Many women become self-conscious about their breasts as they age, due to loss of skin elasticity and natural shape. Elevated, pert breasts remain a sign of youthfulness for many in today’s society. Breast lifts are becoming more common, according to recent data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS). This type of procedure has grown by more than 70 percent since 2000, surpassing breast implants two-to-one

Benefits of Breast Lift

A breast lift can do more than just reshape your breasts, it can help you feel more comfortable in your own skin. By restoring a youthful contour, this procedure enhances both how you feel and how clothing fits.

Benefits include:

  • Improved breast position and firmness
  • A more youthful, lifted chest contour
  • Enhanced balance and symmetry between breasts
  • Clothes and bras fit better, increasing comfort
  • Boosted self‑confidence and silhouette satisfaction
  • Long‑lasting results that resist sagging over time

Am I a candidate for Breast Lift?

You might be a good candidate if your breasts feel heavy, sit lower than they used to, or your nipples point downward. Some people notice that their breasts have lost shape or volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes. If these changes bother you and you’re in generally good health, a breast lift may be a great option.

Most patients are over 18, don’t smoke, and have realistic expectations about the outcome. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to have more children soon, it's usually best to wait. The same goes for anyone with certain medical conditions that affect healing or increase surgical risks. All of this can be talked through during your consultation.

Breast Lift Procedure

There are many techniques for performing a breast lift surgery, but one of the most common is an anchor-like incision along the underside of the breast. This incision wraps around the area where skin will be removed, which also determines the future location of the nipple.

After the excess skin is removed, the nipple and areola are moved into a higher position, as the skin around the areola is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Sometimes, an incision is made only along the areola to lift the breast; other times, an incision is made along the entire areola and the middle of the lower part of a breast, resembling a lollipop. Breast lift surgery can take anywhere between one and three hours, depending on the patient.

Breast Lift Results

You’ll see a difference right away, your breasts will look lifted and feel firmer. Over the next few weeks, as swelling goes down and your body continues to heal, the shape will settle and become more natural. Most patients say they see their final results between three and six months after surgery.

These results last for years, especially if you maintain a stable weight and wear supportive bras when needed. While your body will continue to age, the improvements from a breast lift are long-lasting.

Breast Lift Recovery

Following pregnancy, patients may notice changes in their breasts that aren’t necessarily for the better.

Typically, our Long Island breast lift patients will wear a specialized surgical bra for approximately three weeks, based on the patient’s personal needs and rate of healing.

Although pain may be felt after the surgery, it can be remedied by oral medication. Plenty of rest and limited movement is recommended for the duration of the post-operative process. Breast lift recovery typically involves some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort in the days following the procedure. Following your Breast Lift Long Island plastic surgeon, Dr. Marotta will provide detailed aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth healing process, including the use of supportive bras to reduce swelling and maintain breast position. Most patients can return to work within a week, though strenuous activities should be avoided for about 4–6 weeks to allow the breasts to fully heal. As swelling decreases, you’ll begin to see the enhanced shape and firmness of your breasts. Full recovery can take several months, with final results becoming more apparent once the skin and tissues settle into their new shape.

How Much Does Breast Lift Cost?

The cost of a breast lift varies because it’s tailored to your body and your goals. Pricing depends on things like the technique used, how much lift is needed, and whether you’re combining it with another procedure like implants or a reduction.

When you come in for a consultation, we’ll go over a detailed quote. This usually includes the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia, the cost of the operating facility, and any follow-up appointments. We’ll also explain what to expect in terms of recovery, supplies, and support garments, so there are no surprises later on.
