An arm lift, also known as a brachioplasty, is a procedure that reduces excess sagging and downward drooping of arm skin.
This surgery tightens and smooths the underlying supportive tissue that gives the arm its definition, and reduces localized fat pockets in the upper arm. Sagging arm skin can be caused by a range of factors including age, hereditary disposition and weight fluctuations. Although exercise is one of many healthy lifestyle choices, exercise alone cannot usually correct this type of issue. If the underside of your upper arms sag, or appear loose, or full due to excess skin or fat, an arm lift may be the right procedure for you.
During an arm lift procedure, a patient is placed under anesthesia or sedation, as determined by the surgeon. Depending upon the amount and location of excess skin that will be removed, an incision will be made on the arm. Often, incisions are placed on the inside of the arm or the back of the arm, and can extend from the underarm to the elbow.
Excess fat is then removed. Underlying supportive tissue is tightened and reshaped with internal sutures. The skin is then smoothed over the new contour of the arm, and liposuction may be performed to improve overall contour. Incisions will be closed with absorbable sutures or stitches that will be removed within a few weeks after the surgery. During the recovery period, dressings or bandages may be applied to the incisions, or the arms may be wrapped in compression garments to minimize swelling.
A small thin tube may also be temporarily placed under the skin to drain fluid or blood. Although patients have reported discomfort after surgery, oral medication can be provided to alleviate some symptoms. Most Long Island arm lift patients can return to their daily routine within two weeks, and four to six weeks for their exercise routine.
