A new surveyfrom the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) reveals just how popular plastic surgery has become among Americans.
TheASDS highlighted in a press releasethat half of consumers are currently considering a cosmetic procedure, and the specialty in which their plastic surgeon is board-certified is further increasing both the appeal of the procedureand the patient'sultimate decision.
The survey found that consumers are most concerned by who will actually be performing their surgery, highlighting board certification and specialty as the most important factors for electing to have a procedure done. The respondents also pointed to cost and referralas other important considerations.
"Consumers are savvy, and they understand that the specialized training board-certified dermatologists receive makes them uniquely qualified to deliver the results they are seeking for their cosmetic procedures," said ASDS President GeorgeHruza, MD, MBA.
Whichfactors drive consumers to undergo procedures in the first place? The survey found the top three reasons, the same for the past three years, are still:
- Appearing more attractive overall
- Appearing as young as they are, or better for their age
- Feeling more confident.
Some of the top cosmetic concerns driving patients to seek out cosmetic surgeryinclude excess weight, lines and wrinkles around or under the eyes and excess fat under the chin and neck. In addition, sagging facial skin remains a major factor, with 67 percent indicating this as a preferred change they want made.
