As plastic surgery continues to grow, many wonder why exactly patients choose to make a change. Once seen as vain and unnecessary, plastic surgery is now one of the most popular medicalprocedures performed by trained professionals, with a total procedure increase of 115 percent since 2000.
"Buttock augmentations have increased by 252 percent in the past 15 years."
Although plastic surgery remains a popular choice for many, the type of procedures patients choose to undergo has changed over time and continues to do so now.
According to recent statistics compiled by theAmerican Society of Plastic Surgeons, two surgeries in particular have increased greatly in popularitywithin the past few years. The study found that:
- Plastic surgery procedures have increased by 2 percent since 2014.
- The top five cosmetic procedures were breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and tummy tuck.
- The top five minimally invasive procedures include Botox, soft tissue fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal and microdermabrasion.
"While more traditional facial procedures and breast augmentations are still among the most popular, we're seeing much more diversity in the areas of the body patients are choosing to address," said ASPS president Dr. David H. Song in a press release. "Patients have more options than ever, and working closely with their surgeon, they're able to focus on specific target areas of the body to achieve the look they desire."
As some surgeries remain popular, others are gaining in popularity, such as buttock augmentations and breast reduction surgeries.
Buttock augmentations have increased by 252 percent in the past 15 years, with many desiring more pronounced backsides.
For the first time ever, men currently account for 40 percent of breast reduction surgeries, a 5percent increase from 2014. Many men choose to undergo this procedure in order to eliminate oversized breasts, often caused by a genetic condition.
