What is your opinion on plastic surgery? Someview it as a life changing experience, one that enables patients to enhance their appearance and achieve their most-desired looks. Others believe it is a waste of money, and a reflection of an over-focus on surface appearances.
According to a recent study published in theJournal of Craniofacial Surgery, this divide in opinionmay be caused by the public’s lack of knowledge of the many skills and abilities that plastic surgeons have. Many of the respondents to this survey indicated that plastic surgeons are only skilled in “cosmetic changes,” but in reality, these surgeons go through rigorous training, similar to any other medical professional, to help patients.
The survey found that participants identified plastic surgeons as thepreferred choice for breast augmentations, breast reconstruction, rhytidectomy (facial paralysis surgery), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)and rhinoplasty. Fewer than half of participants though, identified plastic surgeons as the preferred choice for Botox, cleft lift and palate surgery, open facial wounds, thumb replantation or hand/finger fractures. These surgeries can all be adequately completed by plastic surgery professionals as well.
