Skin, especially on the face, really takes a beating during the summer months. An increase in sun exposure can have a big impact on facial skin appearance, especiallyin the layers that can't be seen.
Intense Pulsed Light Therapy is similar to a laser, but instead of one wavelength, uses the energy of many different wavelengths to treat patients.
That's why dual board certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. James Marotta usestheStarlux from Palomar, the latest device used to perform laser cosmetic procedures, to perform Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy, which utilizes many different wavelengths instead of just one, like a typical laser. The spectrum delivered byIPL treats the visible signs of aging in the skin, such as:
- Rosascea
- Spider veins ortelengectasias (small dilatedblood vessels near the surface of the skin)
- Sunspots or other similar damage
This technology also has the ability to treat a range of body areas beside the fact, including the neck, chest, arms, back and legs.
During the treatment, the handpiece is passed over the targetedarea and pulses of light energy are delivered through a flash of light. The cooling head of the handpiece is applied to the skin before and after the pulse, minimizing any pain or discomfort that may be felt.
After the treatment, a mild sunburn-like sensation may be felt, as well as swelling, but thiswill dissipate with time. Results can often be seen within a week or two of treatment, but several proceduresare often required for best results.
